Sheyne Tuffery

Paper Architecture

25 June - 31 July 2016

About the exhibition

New Zealand Samoan artist, Sheyne Tuffery describes his first Marlborough exhibition, Paper Architecture, as “a corker of a show” – a mixture of wall sculpture, works on paper, mixed media on board and a stereoscopic motion graphic. Sheyne’s recent work explores and reconstructs graphic patterns of: Siapo (Tapa), and the structures of a traditional Samoan house (Fale) into various digital and three-dimensional formats to re-create a sense of belonging of his Samoan heritage.

After completing a Bachelor of Visual Art at Auckland University of Technology in 1995, Sheyne Tuffery was one of the new generation of Pacific artists included in the landmark 1996 exhibition Bottled Ocean, curated by Jim Vivieaere for City Gallery Wellington. In 2000 he gained a Masters in Fine Arts in print-making from Elam School of Fine Art, University of Auckland. Between 2007 and 2012 he ran LeSa Gallery in Petone, exhibiting and curating shows of Pacific painters and print-makers. Tuffery has exhibited widely in New Zealand and internationally. His most recent solo exhibition is Ghost in the Machine, Deane Gallery, Wellington City Art Gallery, 2013
