Serious Fun, The Art of Picture Books

21 June - 27 July 2014

About the exhibition

This exhibition features Illustrations by best-selling, entertaining illustrator, Donovan Bixley, with works by the finalists of the most recent Gavin Bishop Award for emerging illustrators.

Images: Donovan Bixley, Three Bears…(written by Yvonne Morrison), Dashing Dog, (written by Margaret Mahy), Patrick McDoanld, (winner of the 2012 Gavin Bishop Award), A Perfect Chirpy Christmas, (written by Kyle Mewburn).

As a boy, Donovan Bixley discovered that drawing cool things like trucks kept the school bullies at bay. He was also one of those kids who was inspired by comics, his mum reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and he drew everything he saw. His parents introduced him to graphic art and at the end of high school Donovan was accepted into the AUT School of Art and Design in Auckland. After graduating, he and his wife set up their own design business.

Serious Fun with Donovan Bixley (get inside the Illustrator’s brain!) 10.30am-12, Wednesday 9 July 2014 (ages 5-10)
