Floor talk with Curator Francis McWhannell

31 August 2024

Join us at the Marlborough Art Gallery as we unlock the secrets, stories, and inspirations behind the paintings in the Gathered Voices: Highlights from The Fletcher Trust Collection exhibition.

Exhibition Curator, Francis McWhannell will speak about the Fletcher Trust Collection, and the artists and themes in the exhibition. Francis will give an insight into the curatorial process, the significance of each artwork, and the larger tapestry of New Zealand's cultural heritage that this exhibition celebrates. Through his expert lens, discover the hidden narratives and fascinating connections that bring these masterpieces to life.
Francis McWhannell is a writer, gallerist, and exhibition-maker. He holds a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of Auckland Waipapa Taumata Rau. Since October 2019, he has been curator of the Fletcher Trust Collection, a major private collection of Aotearoa art. In February 2022, he and Jade Townsend opened Season, a commercial gallery based in the centre of Tāmaki Makaurau. He has written essays for exhibitions at public and commercial galleries, and has contributed to a range of arts and culture magazines and websites, including Art Collector (Australia), Art News Aotearoa, The Spinoff, and the Pantograph Punch.
